NEW YORK (Dagbladet): Cuomos’ current employee (63), Alyssa McGrath (33), tells the New York Times what she perceives as sexual harassment by the governor.
According to McGrath, among other things, he has looked at her body, asked why she didn’t have a wedding ring, commented on her appearance and made flirty comments to her and another employee.
Various charges
Several former employees have charged the governor in distress. The most serious allegation is that he allegedly touched another female employee when they were alone at the governor’s residence last year, according to the Times-Union newspaper.
– It bothers me a lot to hear him talk about this and completely deny all the accusations. “I have no doubt that all these accusers are telling the truth,” McGrath told the New York Times.
Isolated: – Foolish and dangerous
She says the unpleasant situations with the governor started shortly after she was hired in 2018. Among other things, the governor is said to have commented on how pretty she was with an Italian expression.
Then another episode happened in which she was summoned to Cuomo’s office to dictate. She describes how she was lonely and nervous.
– I looked down and waited for him to start talking. And he did not begin to speak. So I looked up what was going on. And he stared at my shirt, McGrath tells the New York Times.
Asks you to leave: – Disgusting
– Unacceptable behavior
When the governor saw that she had discovered the gaze, it is said that he began to ask what was in the jewels around her neck.
– I got really hot in the face, says McGrath and describes how she felt embarrassed by the incident. He is also said to have told a colleague about the incident.
Cuomo has always denied that he did anything wrong, but at the same time apologized if anyone found what he did inappropriate.
– This would have been unacceptable behavior from all the bosses, and especially the governor. The women are there to work for New York state, not to act as its adornment or potential girlfriend, McGrath’s attorney, Mariann Wang, told the newspaper.
Defends itself
Cuomo’s attorney, Rita Glavin, defends the behavior.
– The governor has greeted men and women with hugs and a kiss on the cheek, forehead or hand. Yes, he has posed for photographs with his arm around them. Yes, use Italian expressions like “ciao bella”. None of this is sensational, although it may be dated. “He has made it clear that he never did anything inappropriate or touched anyone inappropriately,” Glavin told the New York Times.
Accused of harassing employees
Cuomo was originally praised for his efforts during the pandemic. But lately he’s been under a lot of pressure. He is not only accused of several cases of sexual harassment. He’s also being investigated for covering up corona deaths at the state’s nursing home. A large number of prominent Democrats have already asked Cuomo, who is also a Democrat, to resign.
He himself has refused to resign and asks people to await independent investigations from the state justice minister and elected representatives in the state assembly.
