Almost three weeks since the last crown death

– The most interesting thing at the moment is that there are no deaths, says Dr. Jacob Berild from FHI to NTB. Follow the death statistics with an argumentative eye. But since the end of June, only two or two deaths a week have been reported. Therefore, 80 percent of all corona deaths occurred at the end of April.

– I would definitely hope that the lethality had decreased, says Berild. Lethality tells how many of those who have contracted a disease die from it in a given period of time.

Passed sweden

At the same time, infection rates have risen sharply in recent weeks. For the first time since April, corona infection in Norway is now higher than in Sweden. In the past seven days, there have been 1.4 new cases of corona for every 100,000 people in Norway, compared with 1.1 in Sweden, according to NRK. In sheer numbers, 454 new cases of infection were recorded in Norway last week, compared with 564 in Sweden.

In the last 24 hours, 92 new cases of coronary heart disease were registered.

The worst outbreak has occurred in the municipalities of Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg, where 219 people have been diagnosed with corona infection in the last week. Around 2,300 people have been quarantined after the outbreak, which has branches in several other nearby municipalities.

Bergen is also hit by a major outbreak, especially among students at the Norwegian School of Management (NHH). A total of 131 students were infected Monday. This weekend, a corona infection was detected in 78 new people in Bergen.

More tests and better routines

But most new infections occur in the youngest age groups, especially those in their 20s and 39s. This is one of the main reasons why the death toll remains low, says Berild.

“So far, we have not seen much of the infection spread to vulnerable groups, such as the elderly,” he says.

To date, around six out of ten corona deaths in Norway have occurred in nursing homes.

The situation is also reflected in the number of hospital admissions, which has remained relatively stable after the summer. On Monday, 15 patients with proven covid-19 were admitted to Norwegian hospitals, one less than before the weekend. None of the patients received ventilator treatment.

Berild also believes that more extensive testing and better infection control routines have helped prevent the coronavirus from entering health and care institutions.

– Any infection is detected much earlier, he says.

Small increase

Also, many more people are now being tested than before, which means that more cases are being discovered.

– If we had tried the same number earlier, we would have discovered more corona infections, says Berild.

At the same time, new outbreaks that are not controlled can cause the infection to spread again among the elderly and vulnerable. The latest weekly FHI report shows a slight increase in new infection cases among those over 80 in the past two weeks.

– It is important to be aware of this. If the infection is passed on to these age groups, we may experience an increase in death rates, says Berild.
