– It was close, says Jakobsen in the interview with Dutch AD.

It was a chaotic matter during Poland around August that things went horribly wrong.

In search of victory, Team Jumbo Visma rider Dylan Groenewegen sent compatriot Fabio Jakobsen straight to the fence.

– There was blood everywhere. The spectators did nothing, they were too shocked to see me. Florian (Sénéchal, teammate) noticed that I was suffocating in my own blood. I couldn’t move, he saw the panic in my eyes. Reflexively, he raised my head slightly so that blood could flow from his mouth and throat. After that I calmed down, he said. That’s all he can remember, his memory stops there, says Jakobsen.

The Deceuninck-Quick-Step pilot believes his teammate along with UAE medic Dirk Tenner, who crashed to the rescue, saved his life.

Fabio Jakobsen says he received a message from Dylan Groenewegen, to which he responded. The latter has also asked if they could see each other, but Jakobsen wants to wait to see what the healing process will be like.

– The better I feel, the better for him. I didn’t want this. You get a lot of shit from anonymous people behind the keyboard. It’s ridiculous. I really hope that soon he can do what he is good at, which is to ask, and then we can leave everything behind.

– Do you blame him?

– Yes, in a way. I am not open enough to say that it is not his fault. Above all, I am sorry. I feel it on my behalf, on his and on our team, says Jakobsen.

Groenewegen, who was crying, said in an interview with NOS that he had trouble sleeping after the accident.

– I only thought about Fabio and his family. And that will be fine, the Dutchman told the television channel.
