Alert on new test methods

On Wednesday, the government held a press conference on Christmas and the wreath restrictions that apply. Among other things, the government upholds the recommendation that you can have up to five guests during the New Year, but allow up to ten guests on two of the days.

At the same time, local measures for infection control were greatly encouraged and followed if you travel to other municipalities. This also applies to Oslo.

In an interview with VG, Councilmember Raymond Johansen now goes a long way to mark the first week of December as a fateful week in light of the restrictions this Christmas.

– Here are the infection numbers that are the boss, and we are completely dependent on how the infection numbers develop this week to be able to say something about the changes at Christmas for Oslo. But it’s probably better if people prepare for the social shutdown to continue, rather than the other way around, Johansen tells the newspaper.

New test methods

In a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, the city council leader writes that Oslo residents will be offered new testing methods in the future and that there will be a greater degree of testing.

– In some parts of Oslo we have significant infection pressure. According to the National Institute of Public Health, we only managed to catch about half of the infection that exists in society. Although we now have good testing capacity and more than 20 test sites in Oslo, the threshold for testing may be too high for some of our residents. So now we are changing the test strategy in Oslo a bit. We test much more in areas that have a lot of infection, including through massive school testing, new walk-in offers, and new, faster testing methods, Johansen writes.

The numbers can go up

Last week, Oslo had an average of 142 infected per day. The previous week, the average was 182. The city council leader is happy with the decline, but adds that the level of contagion remains high.

– The aim of the changes we are making now to the testing strategy is to detect more infections in Oslo. This, in turn, can cause infection rates to spike a bit. But if we discover more, it is also easier to isolate more infected and track more infections, Johansen writes.
