Alarms delay doctors

Through the covid-19 pandemic, the lack of reports by physicians to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health’s Message System for Infectious Diseases (MSIS) has meant that the NIPH and the Norwegian Directorate of Health lack information crucial about covid-19 infection in society.

Write FHI on your website.

– As a result of this, we spend a lot of resources gathering the requested information, says Senior Advisor Astrid Louise Løvlie in the infection control records department of the National Institute of Public Health.

Strong need

Additionally, FHI writes that decision makers, locally and nationally, are in dire need of a quick understanding of how covid-19 spreads.

Comprehensive measures implemented in society to combat the pandemic are largely governed by information registered in the MSIS, the institute notes.

‘For the Norwegian Health Directorate and NIPH to be able to analyze the infection situation and assess what measures we recommend the Government to implement, it is, for example, absolutely crucial to know where the infection has occurred: in Norway or in the Foreign? Is it related to known exposure to infections in Norway as part of an outbreak? Are employees of health services or health institutions infected? », Writes FHI.

– Great importance

– We can get all this information from the MSIS, so any message from the MSIS can be of great importance. Therefore, even at a time when everyone is busy, we encourage clinicians to prioritize expedited reports to MSIS. Ideally, they should ship them the same day the test response is available, Løvlie emphasizes.

All doctors have the duty to inform the MSIS if they discover or suspect covid-19, and must report a series of data to FHI and the municipal doctor of the municipality where the infected person lives on the same day.

– To handle the pandemic with new and ongoing outbreaks in a good way, we depend on doctors to fulfill their duty to report and quickly send additional information. We use data that is continuously reported in analysis and assessment of the infection situation both locally and nationally, explains Løvlie.
