Airlines have a deadline to refund all refunds, threatened with millionaire fines

There are differences in how far different airlines have gone to reimburse outstanding reimbursement claims. The worst situation is with SAS, according to the Civil Aviation Authority.

– If SAS does not meet this deadline, a penalty of one million crowns a month will be applied from 1 December, says Director of Aviation Lars Kobberstad.

If the order is not fulfilled by February 2021, the Civil Aviation Authority will consider whether the monthly amount should be increased.

No promise from SAS

For E24, SAS press director John Eckhoff says the airline works hard and withdraws 5,000 reimbursement claims per day, but that there are still “several hundred thousand cases.”

SAS cannot promise that it will be able to process all cases on time.

– We do not have an estimate of time for when we will be at the finish line, he says.

– Good dialogue with airlines

Norwegian has announced that they will be up to date with payments by the end of October, while Widerøe has stated that they have little to return.

Coercive fines will also be considered for the other companies if they do not follow the schedule they have drawn up for the Civil Aviation Authority.

The aviation director says they have a good dialogue with the airlines and that they hope the situation will be resolved.

– We experience that there has been a positive development in the way airlines have prioritized this, after we brought this up to them before the summer break. It has taken a long time, and now is the time to meet the requirements, so we set a deadline, says aviation director Kobberstad.
