Afghanistan, Iraq | McConnell criticizes Trump for plans to withdraw forces in the Middle East

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell warns President Donald Trump against the withdrawal of military forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Trump is expected to announce plans in a few days to withdraw 2,000 troops from Afghanistan and 500 from Iraq before his term ends in January.

McConnell believes it will give the extremists a great propaganda victory and that the Americans will turn their backs on their partners in the region.

McConnell further says he will leave room for the Taliban to take over Afghanistan and for IS and al-Qaeda to rebuild. He also compares it to the “shameful” US withdrawal from Saigon in the Vietnam War in 1975.

McConnell is known as a close political ally of Trump and rarely criticizes the president publicly. He says that a quick withdrawal will please those who want to harm America.

The Defense Department has declined to comment on reports in the US media that they have been instructed to prepare for the withdrawal. According to US media, the plans can already be announced this week.

If the pullout becomes a reality, only about 2,500 US troops will remain in each country. Military leaders have expressed concern that it is not enough to guarantee stability.

Ending America’s wars abroad has been an important electoral promise for Trump. He has also previously said that he wants troops home for Christmas.
