On Friday, October 30, the police were notified that the 18-year-old had stabbed a woman in Elverum. Large police forces were deployed to search for the boy they had been told was mentally unstable.

The preliminary autopsy report shows that he died of severe head injuries. Police currently have no information that the teen was drunk. But they know he was mentally ill.

The special unit for police affairs periodically receives information about the search operation.

Accused of attempted murder

The dead 18-year-old is now charged with attempted murder. Police say it was necessary to remove the charge to carry out the necessary investigations.

The investigation so far shows that he was mentally ill and had no connection to the woman he stabbed, says police attorney Maria Husebye Fossen.

His parents reported the 18-year-old missing in Oslo after he took the bus from Oslo to Elverum. The police do not know why he went to Elverum, but he has relatives there. The police received several messages from both the bus passengers and others when it arrived at Elverum because they perceived it as unstable. Police searched for him Thursday night and Friday night without finding him.

Our assessment then was that he was not a danger to others, says Husebye Fossen.

The tips were both that the teenager was wearing scant clothing, despite the cold outside, and that he seemed unbalanced. But none of the advice followed that seemed threatening.

During the night, the 18-year-old is said to have been inside the Terningmoen military camp and stole a military uniform. The house of the woman in her 50s, who was stabbed, is next to the military camp.

He was in his garden in the afternoon when the 18-year-old appeared there. She has explained that she experienced it as a sudden attack.

It is not known what was said between the two because there are some language problems, says Maria Husebye Fossen.

The teenager was of Norwegian ethnicity, but the woman was of foreign origin. Police do not suspect that the attack was politically motivated. The woman was sent to the hospital with cuts on her neck and underwent surgery.

She is fine with the conditions, but is affected by the incident, says Husebye Fossen.

The police called him

The search for the 18-year-old was conducted in the forest areas near the house where the woman was stabbed. The police dogs collected footprints from the garden and entered the forest, and during the four hours that the action lasted, the police had contact with him several times.

They yelled at him to give up, but he said he didn’t want to and ran further into the forest, says Maria Husebye Fossen.

She says it was a dense forest, foggy and finally completely dark during the operation. The police helicopters could not be used in the search because visibility was too poor. At 6.30 in the afternoon, the police dogs marked in an area of the forest by a tall tree.

The police did not contact him at the time. But they heard that he fell from the tree and landed on the ground, says Maria Husebye Fossen.

Life-saving first aid was started at the scene, but the 18-year-old had suffered serious head injuries from the fall and died on the way to hospital.
