The 13-year-old boy was beaten at the intersection between Maria Dehlis vei and Grorudveien east of Oslo on Thursday night. He was confirmed dead at Ullevål hospital on Friday at 3:10 p.m., the Oslo police district reported in a press release.
Family members have been notified.
Police arrested and charged a man in his 30s for the collision.
The arrested driver of a dark Mitsubishi SUV admitted under questioning to having been at the scene Thursday night, approached the pedestrian and left the scene. He is currently accused of violating the Road Traffic Law § 31, cf. § 12, but the charge will be extended, says Rune Skjold, head of finance investigation and specialized letter investigation in the Oslo police district, to Dagbladet.
The charge was extended Friday night to also apply to negligent homicide.
Under investigation
Dagbladet receives confirmation that the defendant is currently under investigation in another criminal case, which deals with driving under the influence of drugs.
– When did this relationship happen?
– Not long ago, without my being able to give more details. Therefore, we want to take him into custody at the risk of reappearing, says Skjold.
The previous crime did not involve personal injury, continues the head of the investigation.
The man will be presented for custody at the Oslo District Court on Saturday afternoon.
– He drove at high speed
It was Friday night that police arrested the man for driving on the boy, who was first described as seriously injured.
Witnesses described the incident to police as the car driving at high speed and hitting the boy, who was thrown into the air and collided with another car.
An extensive police chase began after the driver left the scene. Paragraph 12, by which the man is charged after Thursday’s incident, states that anyone involved in a traffic accident is obliged to stop.
– The man was arrested for good police work Friday night. Operational teams managed to locate him, who we believe is the correct author, Skjold tells Dagbladet.
The man was arrested at his own home and the arrest went smoothly.
– In a panic
Dagbladet has contacted the defendant’s defender, Harald Fjeldstad, who says his client has explained himself during questioning.
– You explained that you left the place because you panicked. He also justified this by saying that he saw other people at the scene and that he was sure the boy would get help. Of course, there is no excuse for him not to stop, but rather to say something about the fear and panic in him at the time, says Fjeldstad.
He says his client admits to using drugs or alcohol earlier in the day, but was unaffected at the time of the crime.
– Then the blood tests will reveal if you were affected or not. The same will do the additional investigation to see if you were negligent when you drove the child. He himself has explained that it was an accident.
The defender continues:
– It is important for him to emphasize that he thinks this is terrible and of course the worst for the family, with whom he expresses his deepest condolences. You are in dire straits.
