Rubén won his first Spellemann Prize on Saturday night. The song “Lay by me” is about Ruben’s dead father.

– That’s the nice thing. The story behind the song is quite beautiful. It’s bittersweet then, but it’s the song that gets the song of the year – it’s great, Ruben Markussen (25) tells VG.

Ruben’s “Lay by me” was named “Song of the Year” by the people and the jury during the Spellemann Awards. It’s the song Ruben has worked with the most and that means the most to him. It’s been streamed nearly 64 million times on Spotify.

The song is about her father, Trond Markussen, who died of cancer in 2018.

– I think Dad was very proud, says Ruben to VG.

Also, he says his mother started crying when she heard the news that her son had won his first Spellemann Prize.

The award was presented by Christine Dancke on NRK 1 on Saturday night. Rubén thought they would only interview him as a nominee for the song.

– He’s totally sick. Then they took me out when I found out. I thought all the artists were sitting face to face talking about their songs, because that’s what they told me, but then the surprise came, says Ruben.

Rubén was also nominated in the pop artist category, but that award went to Sigrid.

Nominees in the category included Isah & Dutty Dior with the song “Hello”, Sigrid with “Feel Feel Like Crying” and Kygo feat. Store P and Lars Vaular with “Kem can call me”.

– That’s what’s wrong because you have these great artists with amazing songs. I do not know how it goes. I did not believe it.

– I think it’s so strange that I won and none of them. Little me from Bjarkøy to escape with such a price?

Tonight should be celebrated. Due to the crown situation, the celebration is not what it could have been, but Rubén is brilliantly happy with a couple of glasses of wine with his girlfriend in Fredrikstad.

– I’m with my kind family, and I’ve been here for a month. Fredrikstad, this is where I use my crown time, says Ruben.

– It’s so beautiful here, and the guy’s family is so good. It is like hanging out with many good friends.

Artist Isah also won two Spellemann Awards: Isah beat Carpe in the urban category: – fool

Even Rubén copes with the current situation relatively well. It is heartwarming that he received this year’s song and that he has the opportunity to create many new songs. His next song will be released on Friday, May 8 and is called “Burn Down This Room”.

– It’s a joke not to be able to play live. The week all the strict measures came, he was going to have four concerts. And this summer I was going to perform in more than twenty festivals, but it’s good to take the situation seriously.
