Washington police shut down Congress on Friday after two officers were attacked outside the building. One of them is said to have died from his injuries.

All congressional buildings are closed and employees have been told that no one can enter or exit after a car collides with two police officers and then a barrier.
Congressional police quickly reported the incident on Twitter and confirmed it was two police officers. One of them was described as seriously injured.
During a press conference on Friday night, the police claim that one of the policemen has died as a result of his injuries. They cannot say anything more about the person yet, as the relatives have not been notified.
The other police officer who was injured was taken to hospital with unknown damage.
The crash occurred 91 meters from the entrance to the Senate in Congress, writes the AP news agency.

The perpetrator must be dead
Congressional police say the driver of the car died after being shot. It is said that he was carrying a knife and was shot as he got out of the car.
– The suspect got out of the car with a knife in his hand. He ran aggressively towards the police and did not respond to the charges, Yogananda Pittmann, police chief of the congressional police said during the press conference.
According to the Washington police, there is no indication that it was an act of terrorism.
The driver of the car was sent to the hospital with serious injuries, but died from the injuries he sustained.
This week there is a holiday in Congress and therefore there should have been no politicians working on the building itself.
Nancy Pelosi is calling for the flags outside of Congress to be at half mast after the death of the police officer is confirmed. This is stated by his spokesperson, Drew Hammill, on Twitter.
High security
Security around Congress has been very high since the building storming on January 6 of this year. Later, several Trump supporters and right-wing extremists entered the building as Joe Biden was to be approved as president.
Five people died during the storm, including a police officer, and more than 300 people have been arrested since then, including members of extremist groups such as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.
The FBI has made clear that right-wing extremist groups and some Trump supporters still pose a security threat.
In recent weeks, some of the security measures introduced after the storm have been lifted. Among other things, the high fences surrounding the congress building were removed and the number of National Guard soldiers in the area was reduced.
