According to congressional police, two policemen were injured after being run over by a checkpoint.
The head of Congress, Yogananda Pittman, later said that one of them died in hospital.
The man who was driving the car was arrested and is also dead, he said. She says the video shows that the man got out of the car with a knife and managed to stab a policeman before he was shot. He died, according to US media, on the way to the hospital.
Although the man appeared to have deliberately run over police officers, Washington Police Chief Robert Contee said the episode was not related to terrorism.
Blue then
The photos show police investigating a blue sedan that crashed into a security barrier on one of the streets leading to Congress.
Immediately after the shooting, a large number of policemen arrived at the scene and people were asked to keep their distance. A helicopter landed near the building, according to an NBC reporter.
All congressional buildings were closed after shooting was reported in the neighborhood, what was called an external security threat, and employees were told that no one was allowed to leave or enter.
There has been no danger to members of Congress, as Congress is not currently in session.
Still on tiptoe
The episode occurred while Washington was still on alert after the assault on the Congress building in January, while the election of Joe Biden as president had to be approved by Congress.
Five people died during the storm, including a police officer, and more than 300 people have been arrested since then, including members of extremist groups such as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.
The FBI has made clear that right-wing extremist groups and some Trump supporters still pose a security threat.
In recent weeks, some of the security measures introduced after the storm have been lifted. Among other things, the high fences surrounding the congress building were removed and the number of National Guard soldiers in the area was reduced.
