The nuclear power issue sparked debate at Friday’s national digital gathering.
In the end, a narrow majority of 103 to 97 delegates came in to put a new nuclear energy topic on the MDG party program. Three delegates abstained.
It has created reactions after the decision. Truls Gulowsen, a member of the party’s central board and former leader of Greenpeace Norway, wrote the following on his Facebook page on Saturday:
– Today’s national MDG meeting confirmed yesterday’s brief decision on nuclear energy and thus becomes the only European green party with this uncritical attitude.
– It is a surprising decision, sad and without history, although it is unlikely that it will now have concrete consequences. Fortunately, it can also be sniffed over time. I deeply regret that I did not use energy and speaking time to speak out against the proposal in the debate, but I had no faith that such a change of course would be adopted. I think it applied to a lot of people.
Vice President Arild Hermstad defends the decision before NTB.
– ODM has not advocated having nuclear power in Norway. The decision is a reference to the UN climate panel, which claims that we cannot reach the 1.5 degree goal without nuclear power, it says.
– The essence of the decision of the National Assembly is that the MDGs “will maintain and further develop Norway’s environment within education and research on modern nuclear reactor technology”. We therefore support Norwegian nuclear energy research, Hermstad adds.
