– Consider banning social gatherings

In the last 24 hours, there have been 223 new corona infections in Oslo. There are almost twice as many as the same day last week.

The high figures can be explained by the fact that more and more people are testing themselves in the capital. More than 9,000 tests were carried out in the capital on Friday. It resulted in 314 infections.

Councilman Raymond Johansen estimates that they detect 60 percent of all cases of infection. Previously, this was only 30 percent.

Considering various measures

However, infection rates point in the wrong direction, and despite very strict and intrusive measures over a long period of time, the infection does not descend to a comfortable level.

Therefore, the city council is now considering whether it needs to introduce even stronger measures. Johansen confirms this to TV 2.

– It is very demanding, and now we have to spend the weeks leading up to Easter to stop this development and avoid more hospitalizations, says the city council leader.

He is especially concerned about the infection situation in the 0-19 age group.

– There is a strong increase in this age group, so we are faced with a completely new “ball game”, says Johansen.

– We can’t have it like this

During the pandemic, the Oslo City Council has made it a goal to keep schools and kindergartens open. When the infection increases dramatically among students at the school, Johansen says it may be relevant to shut them down.

He is also concerned about the Easter holidays, and comes with a clear appeal to the parents of the capital.

– We cannot have so there are many young people who are alone at home in Oslo, who celebrate and have fun together. At the same time, we know that in this group there is an explosive increase in infection that worries us a lot, he says.

Johansen says that 90 percent of those who test positive in the capital are now infected with the mutated British variant.

– This means that what lasted before, no longer lasts. The distance requirements are much higher than before, and we see that it has been difficult.

– Oslo must be in sleep mode

The city council leader believes that Oslo has 14 days to fight the infection. Therefore, the City Council will present new measures “in a very short time”.

Johansen says one of the measures under discussion is whether social gatherings should be banned.

– Now we have to put Oslo to sleep for the next 14 days, to see if we can defeat the infection.

He believes that the capital is now in the most serious phase of the pandemic.

– We are in a situation in which people are tired, and not least in this city that has mostly had strict measures for a year.
