The cabin measures 96 square meters and is located in a popular hiking area next to the town of Bjørnskinn.

The current owners bought it until last fall.

The previous owner tells VG that he knew the new owners and that he is very affected by the accident.

– I’m in deep pain. These are my childhood friends. It is a tragic and terrible event. It affects not just families, but the entire community, he says.

The farmhouse was built in 2004, has two floors and several bedrooms. According to NRK, it was renovated in 2017.

VG has received permission to use photos of the cabin from the previous owner.

She says that those who bought the cabin are hikers, who have been very happy in the area.

The previous owner claims that he used firewood to heat the cabin, but gas to power the refrigerator and stove.

At the same time, he emphasizes that he does not know what the new owners used.

Tor Arne Vik is a former board member of Vesterålen Turlag and lives in the village of Bjørnskinn.

According to him, there are 10-12 cabins in total in the area.

He says that it is not possible to drive to the cabin, but that in summer you can park a kilometer away. In winter, a scooter is often used to access the area.

– But we still haven’t had enough snow. It’s only a matter of four to five centimeters and not from riding a scooter, says Vik.

Report to NRK that there is a forest road about 200-100 meters behind the burning cabin.

– There is only one path that goes from the cabin to the town. There are also a number of trails in the area, he tells VG.

Run barefoot

The cabin was completely on fire when emergency services arrived at the scene early Saturday morning.

A man survived the fire, which claimed five lives. It is said that he tried to save the other people from the flames, but according to the police, he quickly realized that this was not possible.

He had to run four kilometers barefoot before reaching the parents of municipal doctor Astrid Berthinussen Holm.

Emergency services were notified of the dramatic fire at 0430 hours.
