On Sunday January 10, fresh snow was reported in Trysil, and Rune Røsten and her daughter Hillevi Ragnhildsdatter Røsten hope it could cause powder snow on one of the slopes next to their hut.

There is fog, but when they climb the mountain there is a glorious sun and a blue sky.

The road they have imagined driving is called “The Expert”, and they have traveled it before.

The snow is so hard that they hardly leave any marks, so they drift a bit to the left of the trail, hoping to find better conditions.

It is peaceful in the peaceful mountainous landscape. All you hear is the sound of skiing against the snow getting softer and softer.

– It’s better here, Rune cheerfully yells at Hillevi.

Then the snow cracks in front of him.

Thought i was going to die

– You have to think hard when you run downhill, says Rune.

During the landslide, Hillevi and Rune ended up on opposite sides.

– I thought one thing, I will die, says Hillevi.

Rune had to get her out of the snow. They also lost their skis in the avalanche.

There is a significant avalanche risk in southern Norway, says Ingrid Skrede, service manager for avalanche warning at varsom.no.

She emphasizes that people should be on the lookout for roars and creaks when they go for a walk.

Despite a very unpleasant experience, Rune and Hillevi have skied at Trysil afterwards.

– My trainer said that I have improved my skiing after the avalanche. He said that now that I have experienced a landslide, going through the gates is not so dangerous anymore, Hillevi says.

Now they are encouraging everyone to bring avalanche gear on a trip.

– If you think you can try to escape the avalanche, forget it. It happens very fast, says Rune.
