FHI and the government have so far advocated for a uniform distribution of vaccine doses throughout the country. But when the Moderna vaccine arrives on Tuesday, everything will go to Oslo.

The Moderna vaccine was approved in the EU and Norway last week and the first 4,000 doses will arrive in Norway on Tuesday. In municipalities, vaccination with the Pfizer vaccine is already underway.

The Pfizer doses have been distributed evenly in the municipalities, all have received some, even the municipalities completely free of infection. Some municipalities have received five doses a week.

But the 4,000 doses of Moderna all go to Oslo.

– The doses will be distributed in Oslo and will be used to vaccinate risk groups over 85, writes FHI.

– What is the reason why Oslo receives these first doses?

– Currently there is a fairly limited number of doses. There are 4,000 now and 6,000 in 14 days. We think it’s appropriate to send them to a place that can use these doses fairly quickly, says area director Geir Bukholm at FHI to VG.

  • How many doses do we receive? In theory, Norway will receive 67,000 doses of this by the end of February. By comparison, we get 320,000 vaccines from Pfizer in the same period. But it is not so easy to plan the vaccination. Because while we get 40,000 doses of Pfizer a week, Moderna ships 4,000 this week, but it won’t arrive until week 6.

Dose to municipalities without contagion

When asked if they had changed their strategy, so that the municipalities with the highest infection pressure now receive the doses first, FHI responds:

– No, so far there have been no changes in strategy. But we are continually considering whether we should go for a more regional priority, says Bukholm.

– It will depend on several factors. Among other things, the great differences that exist in the infection pressure in different regions. So far, we have not chosen to change that strategy, says Bukholm.

In other words, municipalities without infection and municipalities with a high level of infection must remain equally equal in the distribution of the Pfizer vaccine.

– A longer-term distribution of Moderna doses nationwide is determined when the supplier can say more about the volume and timing for future deliveries, writes FHI.

Must save half

Each person should receive two doses of the Moderna vaccine. The company has asked Norway to withhold enough doses so that everyone who is given the first dose can now also receive the second. In other words, the municipality of Oslo cannot use all doses at once.

2000 can be used for dose one, but 2000 must be saved until the same people receive dose two.

– Moderna has asked Norway and other countries to save dose two, as they can never rule out delivery problems. This means that FHI will guarantee the storage of dose 2, writes FHI.
