“We need you, our Republican friends, to try to stop,” said Rudy Giuliani, the personal attorney for US President Donald Trump, in a leaked audio recording.
The recording is now making big headlines in the United States for several reasons: the timing, the subject, and not least the mistake.
Det Giuliani tried What he had to do was call Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville to ask him to protest the result of the presidential election. At the other end, there was no response, so Giuliani expressed the wish in the form of a voice message to the answering machine.
Trump’s lawyer should not be successful.
Would buy time
Because the number that Giuliani called was not for Senator Tuberville, who was very close to Trump, but for another senator. However, this unidentified senator shared the recording of the voicemail with the conservative newspaper Dispatch.
Later, Dispatch released the voicemail in its entirety.
The recording shows that Giuliani’s motivation was, above all, to buy time. He wanted Tuberville, and other Republicans in Congress, to protest the results of not just three states, but ten states.
– The early stages of a coup attempt
Then Giuliani tells him why he needs to buy time. Trump’s attorney believes, quite incorrectly and without any evidence, that lawmakers in the states where Biden won by a narrow margin may be close to reversing the outcome.
Giuliani says – wrongly – that the legislatures of several states are “very, very close to withdrawing” their official election results, which have been certified and approved for a long time.
Full of falsehoods
Trump’s attorney left the speech after the siege of Congress ended, but before the federal legislature began the final, and highly symbolic, certification of the election results again.
Yet when Giuliani called, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had made it clear that democracy would run its course, despite violent unrest and the siege of Congress. McConnell also made it clear to Congress com to certify the election, as they had started earlier in the evening Norwegian time.
She collapsed. He stayed
Giuliani later said – again incorrectly and without evidence – that McConnell’s decision “outraged” the aforementioned state assemblies.
Trump’s personal attorney concludes his speech by saying that he is “available all night.”
It is unclear if Giuliani took the phone on his own or Trump’s initiative, or if he called other members of Congress.
