A report from the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority claims diversions have been found on the Martin Linge platform in the North Sea. It informs Reuters on Tuesday and the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority in a message on their websites.

The discrepancies include:

  • Overview of locked security features
  • Design of the alarm system in the control room
  • Control device design and human-machine interface
  • Onshore / offshore software management
  • Monitoring of the internal requirements of the control system with safety functions
  • Monitoring of improvements in the maintenance system.

Notified of the order

The audit identified nine breaches of the regulations, as well as three conditions that are categorized as points for improvement. As a consequence, a notice of order has been issued, with a deadline for compliance on January 15.

The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority has asked Equinor to implement the necessary measures to ensure that the transfer of the necessary information on the status of safety systems in the event of a shift change complies with the requirements of the regulations.

Known issue

Tuesday’s order joins the ranks of several challenges Equinor has faced in its work with field Martin Linge.

– This is something we take note of and point to challenges that we ourselves are familiar with and are working to remedy. We’re not surprised it’s coming, says communications manager Fredrik Jebsen Bråten.

– Will you be able to make improvements within that period?

– Yes, these are topics that we know well and that we have been aware of, and that have been worked on during the last year, answers Bråten.

– If it’s known issues, how did it happen?

– It takes time. It takes time to get a platform into production, and a secure platform is the first priority for us, and this is how long it takes to set up the field for a secure start-up, says Bråten.

Working towards planned start-up

Commissioning at the Martin Linge field was postponed, from the planned start of its predecessor Total in 2016, and is now scheduled to be in the summer of 2021. When the state budget was submitted in October 2019, the platform had exceeded costs at NOK 25.7 billion. corresponding to 85 percent.

Bråten rejects that this further affects the planned start-up or budget.

– We are still working on a planned start-up this summer, says Bråten. (Terms)Copyright Dagens Næringsliv AS and / or our suppliers.
