THE SLIDER WAS BEFORE CHRISTMAS: The rapid clay landslide at Nannestad went through the Leirebekken clay course.
Before Christmas, about 20 people were evacuated from a village in the neighboring Gjerdrum municipality, Nannestad, in Romerike. The evacuees have not yet been allowed to return.
Seven people have been confirmed dead, three are still missing and hundreds have been evacuated after the major landslide at Ask in Gjerdrum municipality last week.
On December 17, there was also a landslide in Nannestad municipality, which borders Gjerdrum in the south. The landslide went in a side stream to the Leirebekken clay watercourse.
– Before what happened in Ask, we would have called it a large rapid clay landslide, says Mayor Hans Thue.
There are about 20 kilometers between the two landslide areas:
Around 20 people out of a total of nine houses were, on the advice of the Norwegian Directorate of Water Resources and Energy (NVE), evacuated after the landslide, for fear of landslides. The village with the houses is on the east side of the stream, while the avalanche left on the west side.
These people are still being evacuated.
– We basically arranged for them to stay in a hotel, but it happened a little before Christmas so it was a demanding situation considering the hotels closed. But we find solutions, says the mayor.
Cracks and possible surface movements were also recorded on the east side, under the buildings. On behalf of NVE, NGI has carried out investigations on the ground and is still partly working on this, the Nannestad municipality writes in a press release on January 4.

Additionally, he says they work closely with NVE to track and clarify risks. NGI has conducted test drilling and the municipality expects clarification on January 15 on whether it is safe for evacuees to back out or if measures should be implemented first.
– What thoughts do you have on the evacuation in light of what happened in Gjerdrum?
– What has happened is heartbreakingly painful. But now it feels great and it is correct that we really made the decision with NVE to evacuate these houses. The incident on Ask clearly shows the picture of risk one must grapple with, says Thue, who was in a meeting with evacuees Monday afternoon.
The municipality writes in Monday’s press release that everyone involved understands that the landslide in Gjerdrum is a priority, but that they still appreciate that clarifications will come as planned on January 15, a month after residents had than evacuate their homes.
