GJERDRUM (VG) A small dog was rescued Monday from the landslide zone in the avalanche at Ask in Gjerdrum. The dog is alive and is being cared for by a vet.
This is confirmed by the vet Stefan Feterik at the Domestic Veterinarian in Gjerdrum above VG. The dog was rescued Monday night after it was found in the remains of a house in the area where police have searched for search dog marks on Monday.
– He is in good condition and has received treatment. I don’t have the opportunity to provide more information on this at this time, says Feterik.
The VG journalist at the scene observed the dog as firefighters took him out from Kulturhuset, where crisis management is based. A firefighter patted the dog when leaving with a vet.
– We discovered a dog while digging through the remains of a house, when this dog jumped out of the cavity, says fire service chief Gøran Syversen Monday night. This is the same type of cavity in which surviving humans are expected.
– It is a joy for us and gives us motivation to continue working hard.
The dog is not the first to be rescued alive from the area. The Zajka family dog, a Dalmatian, recovered after being captured by a drone heat search camera on New Year’s Eve. It was the day after the landslide. The next day, the first day of the New Year, the toy poodle Milli was also rescued alive.
The dog that was rescued Monday night was rescued from the avalanche area nearly six days after the avalanche.
On Sunday, the fire department entered the evacuated houses in the area that has been cordoned off after the landslide. They did this to get back any pets that might be there, Operations Manager Gisle Sveen in the Eastern Police District told VG.
The rescue teams then made an assessment that entering the houses would not affect the ability to search extensively in the area of the landslide.
