Color Line is laying off nearly 500 employees. This was stated by the company in a press release on Monday afternoon.

The layoffs are in addition to the 1,000 who have already been laid off, it is claimed.

– I guess it’s short term.

– Can you lay off more employees?

– No, now there is no more to continue. We have about 600 left on the job, says Helge Otto Mathisen, Color Line’s Executive Vice President of Communications and Public Relations.

The company has 2,100 employees and, with the current layoff notice, 1,500 have been laid off.

– Is there a danger of dismissal?

– No, now we do one thing at a time. We are loyal to the government’s measures, but we assume it is short-term, says Mathisen.

In the press release, the company writes that the layoffs can be revoked at short notice when the authorities again allow passenger traffic between Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

Color Line said in September that it will cut costs by NOK 250 million starting in 2021. As part of the restructuring, the company will reduce the number of employees by around 300 man-years.

The company will cancel “Color Magic” between Oslo and Kiel for the time being due to new infection control measures by the government.

With the new national measures, Color Line cannot serve alcohol and cannot gather people. Therefore, the market for cruise traffic falls completely, Mathisen notes.

– With the new rules, there is no basis to go, he says.

Since before, “Color Fantasy” was established on the same route, while “Color Magic” has always been with Norwegian passengers.

The freighters are still on the route, but “in reality, all revenue will be lost as a result of the canceled ships,” writes Color Line.

Outbreak

Last week it emerged that several “Color Magic” employees had tested positive for the coronavirus. Those infected were on board the ship along with 900 passengers. All departures to the ferry were canceled from December 28 to 30, as a result of the outbreak. In addition, several people were quarantined.

Mathisen said Monday that they have “full control” of the outbreak and that no more than the employees have been infected.
