Milan puppy comforts avalanche victims

The puppy was evacuated along with the Berntzen family who live near the crash site. Now the family experiences that the little cub has become a bright spot for many of the avalanche victims they live with at the hotel.

– There are several who have very traumatic experiences here. They have loved ones who have left. When they have Milan on their lap, they say they can finally feel a little joy in their hearts, says family man Geir Egil Berntzen.

Son Emil (21) also knows how good it is to have a puppy to hug now.

– I don’t know how I would manage without him now. And when we go down to reception and meet everyone else, I see how they light up, says Emil Lian Berntzen.

– Hot in the heart

Since the media is not allowed in the hotel, we meet Berntzen along with his son Emil in Holterhallen, where locals have collected large amounts of clothing, toys and food for the evacuees.

– One is warmed in the heart to see how humanity contributes when something like this happens, says Geir Egil Berntzen.

Since they live in one of the evacuated houses furthest from the crash site, they hope to be able to return home soon.

– It is one of the most difficult things that humans can experience.

– All of 2020 was a year in which many things happened, but it ended in a way that you could never have imagined, says Emil Lian Berntzen.

Three people died

A total of three people have been found dead in the avalanche in Gjerdrum. The search for the seven missing is ongoing. Emergency services informed the press late Saturday that the landslide area offers demanding working conditions for rescue teams.

– It’s soft, muddy and huge with debris. We build walkways and paths with wood and polystyrene materials. It’s a demanding job, says Brigade Commander Knut Halvorsen.

Here also the quadrupeds contribute: the dogs contribute in the search. Halvorsen is clear that the probability of finding life is still there.

– We haven’t been very inside the building, but inside the rubble there are pockets of air. We dig where the dogs mark, he says.
