– During the monkey investigations, we found remains of what is probably a child inside the suit, duty lawyer Erik Engløkk tells NTB in the southwestern police district.
It says that the circumstances indicate that the person may have a doctor at sea for a long time, and that so far there is nothing to indicate that it is a criminal act.
In the early afternoon of Friday, January 1, the discovery of a boy’s suit with a life jacket was reported on the southernmost water’s edge at Karmøy in Rogaland, not far from Skudeneshavn.
Police theory: – Tragic accident
The police write in a press release that they will carry out a series of routine investigative steps in the future in an attempt to determine the cause of death and the identity of the person in question.
– It is a work that will be carried out in collaboration between forensic pathologists and the national identification group, Engløkk tells NRK.
This work is expected to take time.
The main theory of the police is that there has been a tragic accident and that the boy has gone to shore.
– The circumstances also indicate that it is often an event that may have occurred outside the country’s borders, says Engløkk.
Findings indicate a person from abroad
The marking on the clothes and the life jacket may indicate that it is a person from abroad, but the police emphasize that it cannot be ruled out that the person in question is Norwegian.
– The find is still not suitable for anyone who has been reported missing in Norway, says Engløkk.
Engløkk says it is difficult to say anything about how long a dead person can have a doctor at sea.
– You probably talk more about months than weeks or days, but there will be speculation, he tells NTB.
On Saturday, Naudetatane will conduct an exhaustive search in the area where the dead man was found.
