Ten people suffered eye injuries from fireworks on New Year’s Eve and the night before New Year’s Day in Norway. This is stated by Chief Physician Nils Bull of the Eye Department at Haukeland University Hospital.

The number of eye injuries this year is five cases less than last year. Three of the ten injuries are serious, while seven are moderately serious.

A serious eye injury is expected to result in a significant reduction in vision. A moderate severe injury is a severe acute injury, but is not expected to result in a significant reduction in vision.

Saved by glasses

One man experienced an electric battery exploding when he turned it on, but was saved from serious eye damage because he was wearing glasses, according to Bull.

Each year, a top overview, from every eye department in the country, collects how many receive treatment for eye injuries after the New Year’s celebration.

Among the injured this year are six men, two children and two women.

According to Bull, three of them were spectators. The two children who were injured are said to have manipulated a power battery and received, in addition to eye injuries, other bodily injuries.

Leaning over the drums

Information Bull has received regarding the accidents shows that two electric batteries must have exploded when the fuse was turned on. Two batteries are said to have capsized and caused serious eye damage.

One of the injured is said to have leaned over a battery when it failed to catch fire on the first attempt. Another is said to have opened a battery after the lit fuse did not completely blow. When the fuse was lit again, the person in question must have received a blow to the face.

In 16 years, there have been 250 eye injuries related to New Year’s fireworks. Additionally, hand injuries, burns, and other minor injuries are reported in emergency rooms across the country.

– There is a lot of irrational use and deliberate misuse of fireworks with shooting at people and ignition indoors. From my professional point of view as an ophthalmologist, I think politicians should introduce a ban on fireworks, Bull says in a press release.
