ASK (Dagbladet): On Friday night, the shore crews withdrew from the landslide area at Ask. The onset of darkness no longer makes it safe to move on foot among the masses.
One person has been found dead, while nine are still missing. The chances of survival get worse with each passing hour.
However, the message from the rescue teams is clear: – We are still looking for survivors.

The operational leader of the fire brigades, Geir Sønderål, tells Dagbladet that there are several reasons why emergency services still believe in finding some of the missing alive.
Until crews receive other medical evaluations or the area of the landslide is searched thoroughly enough, the state will not switch to searching for suspected dead.
– We work all the time on the basis that we will find survivors, according to assessments of the medical device. Airbags can increase your chances of survival. This can be formed by constructions that create a pocket where the person can be, says Sønderål and continues:
– It is difficult to say what should save them, but construction masses have been captured. There may be rooms that are intact, where people may have stayed. That is the hope we have, from my point of view.
Planning for survivors
The operational leader informs Dagbladet that about 30 people have fallen in the area of the landslide and they conducted a search on Friday. In the end, it was the dog’s markings that led the crews to discovery.
– The dogs marked various places and, based on them, excavations were made which resulted in a find, says Sønderål.
Also the leader of the police task, Roger Pettersen, made it clear on Friday that the hope of finding survivors is not ruled out. It also affects the crew’s planning of subsequent work.
“We have planned that we can find more survivors, but we are also prepared to find more dead,” Pettersen said.
Several factors determine
The evaluations now being made of the medical device in Gjerdrum are affected by a number of conditions at the site. Professionals Dagbladet has been in contact with say that experiences from similar incidents show that the chance of survival is very small if you end up in the loose masses, without any construction or protection around you.
If, on the other hand, you are inside a building, as Sønderål describes, there will be other factors that will determine the result.

In the last few days, it has hovered around zero degrees on Ask. However, the cooling will not necessarily endanger the lives of potential landslide survivors and may instead help increase the chances of survival as the need for oxygen decreases with body temperature.
There are examples of people who have survived chilling below 15 degrees without permanent injury. The speed and depth of the temperature drops will be determined by physical condition and external factors.
Any physical damage inflicted during the landslide will also be a key factor. Fractures or open wounds can cause significant physical damage. Lack of drinking water will also play a role, but an adult can manage for days without access to fluids.
