Odd Steinar Sørengen and his partner Ann-Mari had been sitting for a long time and didn’t go to bed until one o’clock Wednesday afternoon. Daughter Victoria (13) had been in bad shape for a few days and wanted her mother to sleep in her room.
Sørengen was therefore alone in the bedroom when he was awakened by his partner and daughter, who came running shortly before 4 o’clock.
“The house is furious,” they yelled. I thought it got burned and ran after them, he tells Romerikes Blad.
Sørengen has also previously spoken to VG, NRK, and TV 2 about his experiences.
I stayed inside the landslide
The family lived on the second floor of a house for five people in the area of the landslide. When Sørengen approached the bottom of the stairs as he exited the building, the house began to shake.
– When I have two or three steps left, it has started to climb a lot and the whole house collapses while I am still there. At that time, I think Victoria and Ann-Mari have escaped, but I don’t know what they found there, says Sørengen.
He himself lay in a kind of cavity, with no possibility of getting anywhere.
– But after a couple of minutes, the materials begin to sag and he becomes more enraged. Then a bigger opening is created and I go out.
It was completely dark outside. Sørengen screamed and received a response from two neighbors.
– They’re lower than me. So I think I’m sitting on the roof of the house, at least up high.
He was transported to Ahus
The two neighbors were dressed in light clothing, but they were wearing quilts. Sørengen himself was dressed in stillongs and a T-shirt. The neighbors finally made it to Sørengen. There they sat under the duvets for a long time.
– I’m calling Ann-Mari and Victoria. There may be imagination, but I’m pretty sure I get answers too. It’s very chaotic and I interpret it as the answer that comes from somewhere other than our home, he says.
Sørengen eventually gets very cold and loses feeling in her legs. Several helicopters flew over them and picked up people.
– I was afraid they wouldn’t see us, but eventually they will also pick me up and take me to Ask.
From there he was transported to Ahus, cold and beaten.
Still waiting to find the family
– At that time, I am absolutely sure that I will meet them again, either in the hospital or when they tell me they are elsewhere, says Sørengen.
Almost two days later, he still hasn’t received any signs of life from Ann-Mari and Victoria.
– I still live with hope, but it is very heavy. I’m very mentally depressed, he tells RB Thursday night.
Later, he was discharged from Ahus and returned home to his mother. On Friday he will travel to the family center in Gardermoen.
– I was recommended to receive more follow-up. In Ahus I spoke with a priest and I have received good support from everyone present. My hat is off because of the treatment they give me!
On Thursday night, it was also learned that a dog was pulled from the avalanche in good condition. The dog was not in the same area where Sørengen and the family lived. That gives you more hope.
– I think there may be hope, even if I don’t look so bright. I have said that I would do a lot to change places with my daughter. He is 13 years old and has a life ahead of him!
