It has been almost two days since a rapid clay landslide erupted in a residential area in the city of Gjerdrum. Ten people are still missing and police believe they are in the area of the landslide.

On New Year’s Eve, several people had gathered at Veståsen school in Gjerdrum to light candles to show their support for those affected by the disaster.

– What happened is not right. I’m also a bit scared, because what if one of them dies ?, says nine-year-old Mikio on TV 2.

You have made a heart to show your support.

– I hope they find the ten families that have left. And that they are doing well.

– Absolutely cruel

It was Catrine Lauritzen Eliesen and Ina Woodland who took the initiative for the candlelight vigil. They are both very affected by what happened.

– I thought it was completely tragic and completely cruel to think that there are children who do not know where they are. It’s hard to describe, because that’s how it affects you. It’s painful and tragic, Eliesen tells TV 2.

She says the catastrophic event is hitting the small community hard.

– I think everyone in the whole of Gjerdrum only thinks of those directly affected. You have colleagues, friends and people who have relatives who live in this area. This is how you find out about it, it doesn’t happen near you. But suddenly it happens anyway, says Eliesen.

– we are sorry

Among the many who lit candles were several children. TV 2 met five boys and girls aged five to ten.

– We are here to remember what happened and because we regret what happened. It’s awful. People have lost their homes and families are missing. It’s not something I like, says nine-year-old Celina on TV 2.

Ten-year-old Adrian was visiting his grandmother, who lives just 500 meters from the area of the landslide, when the landslide occurred. The ten-year-old says he was a bit scared when the police came to the door.

– Actually, they were quite stressed and said we had to go. But we had packed before they arrived, so we grabbed all the stuff and went to the car to drive away, Adrian says.

The children agreed that New Year’s Eve this year did not turn out as expected.

– It is not common and there is little to think about. It’s crown, so you won’t be able to meet as many friends and have fun with them either. Now there has been a landslide, so we in Gjerdrum have to take care of that too. It will be a little more difficult, says Celina.

– Where are the last?

Initiator Ina Woodland says the light brand came about because they wanted to show their support for those affected.

– It is absolutely horrible and very sad. This is not something you will experience at the end of the year. We just want everyone to be able to celebrate and have a good time. It’s sad that this adds to the pie of everything that has happened this year, Woodland tells TV 2.

During the night, more people flocked to light candles. One of them was Anna Linnea Lystad.

– It’s very overwhelming. Most of the people I speak to agree that it is unreal that this is happening here. It hurts everyone when he’s so little, he tells TV 2.

This year’s New Year’s celebration will not be the same for the residents of Gjerdrum. Now they cross their fingers to make up the ten that are missing.

– There will be no New Year’s celebration when it is not known that all those affected are safe. All I think about is where are the last? Can you find them? There will be no rockets, these are our shooting stars and thoughts of those affected, says Eliesen.
