We are facing two years of miserable rewards for the moving vacation. But the consolation is that you can expect a “mini vacation” at an unusual time in just a few months.
Moving holidays can be both a joy and a hassle for many workers, depending on what day of the week they fall on.
The amount of time you have can vary greatly from year to year. In 2019, there was a peak count, with five out of five moving holidays falling on a normal business day. In 2020, it was a pretty fair tally, with May 17 on a Sunday and Christmas Day on a Saturday.

In the next few years, however, it will be bad enough for those who like to have time off from work.
Five landlines and five mobile
In Norway, there are five fixed holidays, which always fall on the same day of the week and are therefore guaranteed to give us time off. Is:
- Holy Thursday
- Good Friday
- Ascension Day (always Thursdays)
- 2nd day of Easter (always Monday)
- 2nd day of Pentecost (always Monday)
These days, you are guaranteed to have free time no matter what.

But alongside these are the five mobile, much less predictable holidays:
- May 1
- may 17th
- Christmas 1
- 2nd day of Christmas
- 1st day of new year
These are holidays that can end on both a business day and a weekend. It is also possible, if you are extremely unlucky, that a moving holiday comes on another holiday, such as in 2028, when the second day of Pentecost is May 17.

Bad account
Exactly that will not happen in 2021, but it will still give bad results:
- May 1, 2021 falls on a Saturday.
- The first day of Christmas of the same year also falls on Saturday and the second day of Christmas on Sunday.
- Furthermore, January 1, 2022, that is, the New Year in a year, will also fall on Saturday. This means that we have zero (!) Legal vacations during the next Christmas holidays.
In 2022, things won’t get much better either. Therefore, January 1, 2022 falls on a Saturday, while May 1 and December 25, in addition to the following New Year’s Day, January 1, 2023, are Sundays.

Christmas Day 2 falls on a Monday, but in return Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, days when many get time off from their employer anyway, fall on a Saturday in 2022.
In 2024 alone there is a full flap and it recovers five out of five moving holidays on a weekday during that calendar year.
The important thing «1. May Rules »
The reason for such weekend holiday “accumulations” in some years has a simple explanation, which the observant reader may have already understood. May 1 falls on the same day as the first Christmas Day and the following New Year’s Day. When May 1 falls on a Saturday, as in 2021, the next Christmas and New Years day will fall on that day as well. Therefore, you need to pay special attention to what day falls on May 1 of each year.
On the other hand, both May 1 and May 17 will never fall at the same time on the weekend, so you don’t have to fear that all moving holidays will disappear during the same year.

A consolation
But while 2021 is a year with few mobile holidays, there is a kind of comfort in the form of a mini-vacation in May. Then, Ascension Day is May 13, while May 17 is the following Monday. If you take time off on Friday, May 14, which is crowded, you can have five consecutive days off, enough for a short vacation.
If you also take four days off between May 18 and May 21, you will also receive the next Pentecost and thus 11 consecutive days off. It may be something to look forward to.
