The Sandman family lost everything they owned in the Wednesday morning landslide. But the family dog ”Zajka”, who had to be left in the destroyed house when they were evacuated, was rescued last night.
On Thursday afternoon, food mom Anna Sandman and daughter Michell Sandman were finally able to see their pet again at the animal clinic.
– It was completely indescribable, says Michell Sandman.
She says the Dalmatian was anesthetized because the leg is damaged. However, “Zajka” tried to get up to greet his family.
– We are very proud and impressed with our dog. I am so warm in my heart. We have lost everything we own, but all four members of the family are alive, he says.
“Zajka” spent 20 hours alone in the area of the avalanche.
I had to evacuate without the dog
On Wednesday, NRK wrote about the Sandman family, who lost their home in the rapid landslide at Ask in Gjerdrum on Wednesday night. The couple Anna and Jørgen Sandman were evacuated by helicopter.
During the evacuation, they had to make a difficult decision. The 10-year-old Dalmatian dog “Zajka” was not allowed to board the helicopter. People had to be prioritized. Thus, the dog was left within the area of landslides, where new houses were constantly disappearing in the fast-paced life-threatening clay.
Sandman says it was a shock to realize that the dog couldn’t join them on the helicopter, but that he understands that people have to be put first.
Bright spot in tragedy
The exploration teams at Gjerdrum are working hard to search for the missing 10 in the clay masses.
It was a helicopter that flew over the area of the avalanche, which found “Zajka” at two o’clock yesterday night.
The family understood that the pet could be alive when a local vet wrote on Facebook that a Dalmatian had been found in the area of the avalanche.
A relieved dog owner told NRK last night that “Zajka” was at the vet.
– We started screaming with joy when we realized that they had found her, says food mother Anna Sandman.
– A moment of joy
It was family friend Ingolf Höns who received the dog from the rescue teams last night.
– It was a liberating experience to see her take her out of the helicopter. A moment of joy and hope in a difficult time, says Höns.
Then he got in the car and drove straight to the animal clinic. The Dalmatian is now receiving treatment for an injured leg, but will be completely fine again. She will be at the clinic for a few days for observation.
– “Zajka” is difficult, says veterinarian Gustav Evensen.
Matfar Jørgen Sandman, who suffered a shoulder injury, is also fortunately doing well. He has a new operation, but he will probably be discharged on Thursday.
