– The frustration has been great

Throughout Wednesday, there has been a huge rescue operation at Ask in Gjerdrum municipality, following the large rapid clay landslide that has prompted the evacuation of more than a thousand people.

Just after midnight on Thursday night, police task leader Dag André Sylju tells TV 2 that the work will continue in full force overnight and tomorrow.

– We have crews from all emergency services, voluntary organizations, people from the municipality and NVE. Everyone who is available will still be present throughout the night, he tells TV 2.

The task leader describes the incident as unreal.

– It’s unthinkable, just unreal. There has been a large landslide and there are a lot of people involved in various ways, he says.

Searching with drones

Ten people are still reported missing. So far, nine people have been reported injured and one of the cases is described as serious.

“This is still a rescue operation, and the hope remains to find people alive,” says Sylju.

Tonight, drones and helicopters are being searched in the landslide area, and police are also considering sending a rescuer with a dog to a building, if they are deemed safe enough. Until now, it has not been possible to physically descend into the landslide zone.

– How does it feel to not be able to enter the area?

– The frustration has been great. Many want much more than they have had the opportunity. Many will come and help where it is most needed. But due to the nature of the landslide area, meaning that it is so dangerous to travel there, it has not become relevant to put crews in the red zone, says the task leader.

– Ten people have not been counted, almost a day after the landslide. What is the chance of finding survivors?

– There will only be speculation to think about those roads. The goal is to find living people.

New landslide Wednesday night

Sylju says that there are two things that made a great impression on her during the rescue operation:

– In the first place, it is the relatives and those directly affected by the landslide who have caused the most impression. Number two is the willingness of everyone involved in this rescue operation. You are so proud of them. There are so many talented people who want to help in the best way, he says.

At around 11 p.m. Wednesday, several houses were reported to have collapsed. Police first informed TV 2 that this applied to four buildings, but then corrected it for two buildings with a total of five addresses.
