The family was evacuated by helicopter. But the four-legged family member had to stay.

The night before Wednesday, a large landslide struck a residential area in the municipality of Gjerdrum. At the time of writing, there are 11 people who have not been accounted for and 10 people have been injured.

Massive work is underway to secure the site and gain control. At the same time, there are still fewer landslides, making rescue work very difficult.

Comment: The landslide in Gjerdrum is a disaster that has been warned and feared for many years.

The disaster has also led several families into a desperate battle to find their four-legged relatives.

Michelle Sandman (19) tells Nettavisen that the family was hastily evacuated by a Seaking helicopter. She herself was not present when she lives in Tøyen in Oslo. But both parents are safe now.

– Mom and Dad were in the house when it fell. They woke up to the fact that the house was moving. They tried to get out, but the roof was already gone. But they brought the dog with them, who was unharmed and calm, he tells Nettavisen.

But according to the family, they were told that the dog could not be in the helicopter. Sandman says he fully understands that it had to be this way, but thinks it’s terribly sad.

– We know it’s a miracle to expect her to be alive. But we sincerely hope it slips out there somewhere, that someone sees it and can tell Ingolf.

When the family was evacuated, family friend Ingolf Höns intervened. He lives about a 20-minute drive from the family home and was not evacuated.

He has posted on Facebook groups and many have helped share information about the missing family member on all fours.

– We appreciate that there are so many who share on Facebook, says Michelle Sandman.

The friend of the family has not been able to register it himself, since the slip zone is closed with a large perimeter. The reason is that the landslide is not necessarily over and there may be more landslides.

– It is very difficult. I contacted the “command center” where they all meet. But now it ranks low on the priority list. I just have to wait and use word of mouth, Höns tells Nettavisen.

He has gone around in search of the dog, but without success. Many have shared it on Facebook.

– We must keep our hopes, he says.

The online newspaper contacted the Main Rescue Center to see if it is common practice to deny that animals join the helicopter.

– An assessment will probably be made in each individual situation. We have no concrete information on this particular case, says Andreas Bull, rescue manager at the South Norway Main Rescue Center in Nettavisen.

The local community has been very involved in the rescue of dogs and other domestic animals. Local Home Veterinarian posted on Facebook and said they offer free veterinary help to all affected animals where possible.

– Do not hesitate to contact us. All animals affected by this incident receive free help from a home veterinarian, they write.
