Grass and Heather Fire Hazard in the North – Ask People to Watch Out for Fireworks on New Years Eve – NRK

It was anything but a white Christmas up north.

While in the south and east of Norway it rained abnormally in December, further north the country has rained and snowed little.

This has prompted the Norwegian Meteorological Institute to issue a warning about the danger of grass and heather fires in Nordland and Troms.

– It’s a bit unusual for the season, says Ranveig Eikil, meteorologist on duty at Vervarslinga in northern Norway.

She says it has been a week without rainfall and that this leads to dry terrain.

– Where there is no snow yet, there will be a local grass and heather fire hazard With sea winds and mostly stay-at-home weather for the next several days, it looks like the danger warning will last through the weekend.

Ask people to be very careful with fireworks.

Over the past 24 hours, several grass and heather fires have been reported.

In Bodø, the fire service responded to a lawn fire in Bestemorenga on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, a lawn fire broke out at Spansdalen in Lavangen in Sør-Troms. There was a 100 meter long area along the river that was on fire. The fire was extinguished in a short time. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but police are investigating the incident.

The combination of New Year’s Eve fireworks tradition and dry terrain worries the Nordland fire service.

Salten Brann came out on social media and warned of the fire danger.

In Narvik, the fire service on Wednesday considered simply banning fireworks.

Now, the local fire brigade has decided to increase the staffing on New Year’s Eve.

Fire Chief Edvar Dahl asks people to be very careful with fireworks this year and remember that even small sparks can start a fire.

– We have decided to handle the emergency response instead of banning fireworks. There are 7-8 extra that are put into reservation service.
