A rapid clay landslide has washed away several houses in Gjerdrum in Viken. These landslides are not reported.

At around 4 a.m. on Wednesday night, a landslide occurred at Gjerdrum in Viken.
Police report that several people are missing after the landslide. More than 200 people have been evacuated from the affected area.
No one was notified of the danger in advance. And those are the routines.
– It is very difficult to say anything about when such landslides occur. Therefore, it is not included in the landslide warning to NVE, says service officer Martine Frekhaug in the landslide warning. It is operated by the Norwegian Directorate for Energy and Water Resources (NVE) and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
She points out that such landslides are triggered after lengthy processes.
– What processes are we talking about?
– It’s hard to say anything about it now. Now we have people trying to understand what caused the landslide, he says.
NVE has established emergency preparedness and assists the police and the municipality with evacuation.
In general, there are two possible causes of rapid clay landslides, according to NVE:
- Prolonged processes such as erosion in a stream hitting a pocket with rapid clay.
- Human impact such as dumping, excavation and blasting.
– There are long and special processes that lead to rapid clay landslides that are not necessarily directly related to the current climate. Therefore, the timing of the rapid clay landslides cannot be heralded.
Dramatic hours
Just after 4 a.m. on Wednesday night, the mayor of Gjerdrum was pulled from his nightly sleep. The seriousness occurred to him immediately.
At the crash site, rescue teams were greeted by dramatic impressions. Images from the site show that there are houses destroyed in the crater after the landslide.
In the morning, evacuated residents were transported out of the area to downtown Ask and then to hotels by bus. A nursing home has also been evacuated. At 9.45am, the police toured the residential area of Ingelstun with the sirens on and called on the residents to evacuate.
Quick clay experts are in Gjerdrum
Norway’s leading experts have been working for several hours to get an overview of the landslide, extent and risk in Gjerdrum.
The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) has dispatched rapid clay landslide experts to the Gjerdrum landslide site, and NVE is assisting in the work of obtaining an overview.
There have been landslides in the area before, but the cause of the latest landslide is not yet known.
Øydis Communications Manager Ulrikke Castberg at NGI tells NTB that they have sent fast clay landslide experts to the landslide site at Romerike, which has a lot of fast clay.
“To get an overview of the situation, NGI has, in addition to the experts who are on the site, experts who are now reviewing all the previous geotechnical investigations and reports that have been done on the site to get an overview of the conditions. off the ground, “says Castberg.

Sent geologists last night
NVE dispatched geologists to the site Wednesday night to help police get an overview of the extent of the landslide, whether it is safe to enter the area and map any further landslide hazards.
NVE has overall responsibility for state administrative tasks with respect to flood damage and landslide prevention.
This includes, among other things, the landslide warning, an important tool for assessing the current landslide hazard and the type of landslide. But the landslide warning does not warn of the danger of rapid landslides and mud.
