A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has been recorded 46 km southeast of the Croatian capital, Zagreb. It depends on the International Seismological Center, EMSC.
The earthquake was recorded by EMSC at 11.19 local time. Also yesterday there were several earthquakes in the same area. One of these had a strength of 5.2.
On Tuesday night at least seven deaths and several injuries were registered. In a statement, the Red Cross assures that the situation in the area is “very serious.”
Several injured
It is especially the city of Petrinja that has been hit by both earthquakes, but in yesterday’s earthquake no one is said to have lost their lives.
The local newspaper Jutarnji list writes that so far a child has been reported dead in the city after today’s earthquake, while several people are said to be trapped in buildings.
Korean authorities reported Tuesday afternoon that at least 26 people have been hospitalized with injuries after the earthquake on Tuesday morning. Six of them are said to be seriously injured.
According to ABC News, there should be more injuries. Some buildings are said to have completely collapsed and one of them is said to have hit a car.
– This is terrible. He’s dead, he’s hurt. We saw a child die in the town square. The city center is completely destroyed, the city mayor, Darinko Dumbovic, tells the online newspaper 24sata.hr.
Call for help to be sent to the city as soon as possible.
– People are panicking. They are looking for friends and family, continues the mayor.
Many people have not been accounted for, and humanitarian workers are now searching for survivors who may have been trapped by collapsed buildings. Dogs are used in the search for the survivors and the dead.
– Som Hiroshima
The mayor of the city, Darinko Dumbovic, says that the city is completely destroyed.
– This is like Hiroshima, half the city no longer exists, he says.
-We remove people from the cars, we do not know how many are affected, there are dead and injured, he adds.
Efforts are being made to find shelter for all the homeless, some being housed in barracks set up by the military, while others have been allocated hotel rooms.
But fearing a new earthquake, many prefer to spend the night outdoors, despite authorities warning that it is too cold to sleep outside.
Please stay outside
Croatian police are urging residents to get out and get away from buildings that could collapse.
– People who live high up should find a load-bearing wall, the police encourage even more.
The powerful earthquake could be felt throughout Croatia and neighboring Serbia and Bosnia, reports ABC News.
Also in Slovenia, the earthquake is said to have violently shook the parliament building in the capital, Ljubljana. The city is 200 km from the epicenter of the earthquake. Slovenia has closed its nuclear power plants in a safety measure, several international media report.
