Manchester United-Wolverhampton 1-0
Ole Gunnar Solskjær had never beaten Wolverhampton in the Premier League, and for a long time it looked like Tuesday’s deal would join the ranks.
The Wolves arrived at Old Trafford with a clear battle plan, and until the third extra minute it looked like they were going to clear points.
So Marcus Rashford took matters into his own hands, shot through Roman Saïss and into the net, and turned completely for the red devils.
Thus, the Solskjærs team rises to 2nd place in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory, and is only two points clear of Liverpool when 15 games have been played this season.
– I was deep inside, but it’s usually like that when you play against Wolverhampotn. There are close matches, not many opportunities at either end. I felt that we put a lot of pressure on them in the last half hour and that there could be a goal. Sometimes you hit an opponent and he changes direction, and that was the luck we needed today, Solskjær tells TV 2 after the match.
Could have received a penalty earlier
A situation that the home team will remember and think about what “could have been” is also midway through the second half when the ball bounced off the hand of Wolves defender Conor Coady inside the 16-meter field.
Judge Jon Moss, however, did not want to participate in the penalty calls, nor was there a review of the decision from the point of view of the VAR chamber.
TV Expert 2: – This is how United could have been punished more severely
Throughout the game at the “Theater of Dreams,” it was clear that there were two teams that had done their homework, and the Lobos’ constant counter-attack attempts came close to creating danger on several occasions.
In the video below, you can watch TV 2 expert Petter Myhre show why the orange didn’t fare even better in the first half:
At the opposite end, Bruno Fernandes was closer to everyone in the first half, when he flew through the air and launched a scissor volley from close range. Unfortunately for United’s profile, his compatriot in the Wolves cage was definitely working on that situation too.
– The way he gets his legs back is a brilliant piece of goalkeeping work, TV 2 commentator Endre Olav Osnes said of Rui Patricio’s intervention that ensured he was scoreless midway at Old Trafford.
Samme Osnes also put words to the locals around the settlement after intense opening minutes in the second half.
– It’s soft. It’s tight. It is a battle that stands firm and bows. It is a cup final. Getting three points from these matches is defining who you want to be. This is a golden opportunity for Wolves to jump up the table, and a very good opportunity also for Manchester United, who want to move up to second place just behind Liverpool, the commentator said.
At half time, the home team slammed the ball into the net, but Edinson Cavani was in an offside position when he “scored” from a corner kick. Replays showed the ball had hit a Wolves hand on the road, but Conor Coody’s hand touch was deemed non-punishable, so he was still 0-0 when the game went into the final 20 minutes.
Both teams chased the winning goal. Roman Saïss, who saved points for the Wolves in the final minutes against the Spurs in the previous game, was an eternal threat on set pieces, and Paul Pogba charged the cannon from distance with the remaining quarter.
David de Gea also had to do everything he could to avoid Rayan Ait Nouri.
Rose to second place
It should be absolutely crucial as Rashford appeared in extra time and won the match. A long ball in the back room of Bruno Fernandes, who with him got another assist, was attended to the maximum by United’s number ten.
Instead of United scoring points at home for the sixth of eight possible this season, it was the second straight win at Old Trafford.
– It’s a crucial goal. It’s not nice, but we take what we get and take three points and move on. Today was a difficult game. We were expecting a tough match and in the end we reached the finish line, says Rashford after the match, continuing:
– I think the hill had cramps just before. I remembered that and decided that the next time I got the ball, I would give it a try. I wanted to see if something could happen and luckily the ball went in.
Now Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team has ten points in their last four on their own turf, is unbeaten in nine matches in total and navigates as one of the biggest overall challengers to defending champion Liverpool for the league title.
Just two points up is the decision when 2020 turns into 2021.
– I think the team and the group are getting better and better. We learn to win games. We are in better physical and mental shape. It was one of the points that we raised at the beginning of the season, that we have to add more points at the end of the matches, Solskjær tells TV 2.
