The municipality of Trondheim is considering canceling the traditional New Year’s fireworks from the Kristiansten fortress. The decision will be made tomorrow morning.
The family fireworks display at 7 pm has already been canceled, to the disappointment of some of the city’s families with children. Now it is also a joke because of the fireworks that for several years have gathered large crowds in the fortress area.
– A decision on municipal fireworks will be made at a contingency meeting on Wednesday morning. The fortress fireworks at midnight always attract a lot of people. In the contagious situation that the municipality is in, we fear that large crowds where many are under the influence of alcohol will gather in the fortress, says Harry Tiller, communications manager in the municipality of Trondheim.
Family fireworks were canceled long before Christmas. Until a possible cancellation, the party’s fireworks are the only New Year’s event under the auspices of the municipality.

Expect lots of positive tests
In connection with the cancellation of the family fireworks, the municipality of Trondheim urged the public not to show up at the Kristiansten fortress at midnight. The audience was encouraged to watch the fireworks from a distance.
– We also ask people not to gather many in the same place to see the fireworks. It is important to think remotely and take the necessary considerations for infection control. The charity event also runs on New Year’s Eve, municipal director Morten Wolden said on the municipality’s website.
Trondheim is in the midst of a major infection outbreak, and communications manager Harry Tiller expects many new corona positive tests tomorrow.
– Today we have a decline, but I think it is temporary. On Monday, we tested 1,800 people and expect a lot of positive tests when the tests come in, says Tiller.
The following graph shows the cases of infection recorded daily in Trondheim during the pandemic:
New guides Wednesday
Crisis staff in Trondheim will meet again Wednesday morning to discuss new recommendations related to the infection situation.
– We are facing a situation in which sports and the cultural sector need new guidelines. So do schools, kindergartens and the student community, which will soon be operational again. We fear a further spread of the infection when they return to town after the Christmas holidays. We are also expecting the arrival of 900 foreign students in the new year. Four quarantine hotels are ready, says Tiller.
Although the number of infections is increasing in the municipality, the number of serious coronary diseases is not increasing.
– We have no infected residents in health or wellness centers and only 3-4 people are hospitalized after corona infection. The reason may be that many of those infected are young, says Tiller.
