The Nordland police district confirms that it is Nikolas Hafstad Hugås (19), missing since Sunday, who was found dead after a search operation on Monday.

The 19-year-old was reported missing Sunday afternoon after he failed to return home from a party that night. He was last observed at 3 p.m. in the direction where the party was taking place.

The boy’s family reported him missing at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Found under the ice

Volunteer staff from the Red Cross, Norwegian People’s Aid, Norwegian rescue dogs, the police and a team of drones have been searching for Nikolas since 4.30pm on Sunday.

– They found him in the sea, under the ice. Police have opened an investigative case, but we have nothing to indicate that this is anything other than an accident, police say.

On Monday night, the search operation was scaled down, but continued in full force Monday morning.

– Too early to say anything about what happened

Operations manager Ivar Bo Nilsson tells Dagbladet that Nikolas was found by one of the many volunteers who participated in the search operation.

– They found him in the area where we now have searches for almost two days. We have no theories about what happened, but we have started an investigation and will try our best. There are now forensic scientists on site, so we’ll see if we can find an answer. It’s too early to say anything about what has happened now, says Nilsson.

The name and image are published in consultation with family members.
