On Monday, nine new people were infected with the coronavirus in the municipality of Stjørdal. The municipality reached a new peak of contagion on Sunday when 10 people tested positive.
Between 100 and 200 people are in quarantine.
This afternoon, the municipality held a press conference where they reported on the contagion situation in the municipality.
The municipality of Stjørdal now introduces more stringent measures:
- The municipality requests that the rest of Christmas be canceled. This means that the people of Stjørdal until January 3 should avoid contact with people from other households.
- All planned public events will be canceled for the remainder of the Christmas holidays. Restaurants, bars, concert halls, villages and cafes will be closed.
You must celebrate the New Year with your own home.
As of December 21, Stjørdal has had 35 positive tests. 19 of them in the last two days alone.
Mayor Ivar Vigdenes asks people to stay home for the rest of Christmas and not have contact with anyone outside their home.
– The rest of the Christmas and New Year celebrations should now take place inside your own home, he says and continues:
– We now see infections in more independent settings, with closer contacts, partly unknown and with more unknown sources of infection than before.
– Reckless with large collections this year.
The municipal chief doctor Leif Edvard Muruvik Vonen is concerned.
– We have tried to avoid this, but today we are not in control. The number of positive tests is too high for us to just wait and see how it goes, he says.
The municipal superintendent explains that there are many small outbreaks.
– We are in a situation in which we have received a spread that we could fear, but that we hoped would not arrive here. We have no control over this dangerous disease. So we must take measures that are stricter than they have been so far, he says and continues:
– I think it is not wise to meet between homes for family reunions or New Years celebrations this year.
Infection in a party setting
Trondheim reached a new infection peak when 64 people tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday. This is the highest number recorded in Trondheim during the pandemic.
In Trondheim, there is a party atmosphere behind some of the infection. This is also the case for Stjørdal.
– It is a party atmosphere that for various reasons may have difficulties to indicate the names of close contacts in the detection of infections, informs the mayor.
In early November, the municipality of Stjørdal experienced a minor outbreak and saw that tightening of infection control measures worked.
The municipality now wishes to enter into a dialogue with neighboring municipalities to control the infection. As of January 3, they will be able to coordinate infection control measures.
