Lionel Messi’s future is uncertain after a chaotic year in Barcelona. Now the 33-year-old Argentine reveals a possible stop in the future.
– I have always dreamed of playing in another league, in the United States. We’ll see if it happens or not, but I would have liked. Not now, but maybe in a few years, Messi says in an interview on Spanish television channel La Sexta.
There has been speculation about Messi’s future for some time, after a turbulent summer. On August 25 of this year, Lionel Messi announced that he wanted to leave Barcelona, the club he has played for throughout his adult career.
After a few weeks of fights with the club, he ended up staying, despite being very critical of the then president of the club, Josep Maria Bartomeu. He left his post this fall. Messi thought he had a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave the club, but Barcelona, led by Bartomeu, thought Messi was trying to apply the clause too late.
Messi believes that he could have won the case in court.
– I know that if we had gone to the court, we would have won. Not just one, but several attorneys have told me. But he didn’t want to leave the club that way, Messi says in the interview.
He now has a contract that expires in the summer of 2021. This means that Messi will soon only have a six-month contract and will therefore be free to negotiate with new clubs from the new year.
– I can’t say what will happen, because I don’t know. I will not negotiate with other clubs now, I will wait for the season to end and I will make a decision then. If I leave, I will leave in the best possible way for both myself and the club, says Messi, adding that Barcelona is bigger than any player.
This summer, speculation arose as to whether he would end former coach Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Messi reveals that they are still talking.
– I don’t know how long it’s been since we last spoke, but we spoke together. We are not talking about meeting again. For me Pep is the best coach, he has something special, says Messi.
In the same talk, he reveals that it is not appropriate to go to Real Madrid, or to follow in the footsteps of his friend Luis Suárez to Atlético de Madrid. A reunion with Neymar may be tempting, but Messi sees a big problem, which will be very expensive to get Neymar.
Lionel Messi thus keeps the door wide open for what happens next summer.
