On Sunday, Patrick Bamford took the opportunity to send a small blow to his former coach Sean Dyche. The Leeds player first provided a penalty, then sent the ball into the goal with his bare hands. Burnley was duped by the draw and never managed to defend himself in the match.
Even before five minutes had been played, referee Robert Jones blew the whistle and signaled the penalty spot. Patrick Bamford does not normally accept penalties from Leeds, but insisted on doing it himself. It was no accident, according to experts from the TV 2 Premier League study.
– This is revenge. This will take it, this dagger will put on Sean Dyche, said Erik Thorstvedt.
Sean Dyche and Patrick Bamford have a history. When Bamford played for Chelsea, he was on loan at Burnley for a time, with Dyche as coach. In interviews, Bamford has recounted how manager Sean Dyche made fun of him, because he came from a privileged upbringing with a private school and good advice.
– There were some comments. Dyche said that playing for Chelsea and growing up meant I never had to work for anything. But my experience is irrelevant. I started in Nottingham Forest, where I flushed the toilets and scrubbed the shower, Bamford has recounted the conflict with Dyche.
Dyche has not commented on Bamford’s specific allegations, but praises the development Bamford has shown.
– He has shown talent from a very young age. There has always been talent there and he brings it to the table this season, Dyche said of Bamford’s accomplishments at Leeds this season.
– It is impossible to have a free kick
It was Leeds who were clearly the best and who created the most opportunities in the first half. But also Burnley forward Ashley Barnes sent the ball into goal before the break. However, referee Jones had already flown a free kick to Meslier in the Leeds cage, after a duel with Ben Mee.
After the game, coach Sean Dyche was clearly upset that he was tried against Mee.
– It is impossible to have a free kick, when you only try to head the ball. The referee doesn’t even wait to see what happens, Dyche said after the game.
Experts in the Premier League study also reacted to the fact that it went in favor of Meslier.
– It’s crazy, Thorstvedt said about the free throw.
– Meslier goes up with his knee on his back and Ben Mee does nothing wrong. Absolutely nothing. Jones makes the mistake of blowing too early, otherwise the VAR would have looked at this and the goals would have passed.
But Jones had already flopped and therefore Burnley was still duped by his draw. Burnley kept up the pressure in the second half, but with Meslier in the cage, Leeds managed to clear.
Only two points now separate Burnley from Fulham in the relegation zone. Leeds is 11th with 20 points.
