After Liverpool star Mohamed Salah in an interview with Spanish AS declared that his future “is in the hands of the club”, grumpy rumors and a possible transfer have gained momentum.
Liverpool insider: – I think the interview is designed to give you a new contract
In his interview with AS, Salah said, among other things, that he was disappointed that he was not allowed to wear the captain’s armband in the Champions League game against Midtjylland earlier this month. In the absence of the entire captaincy team, consisting of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum, local superstar Trent Alexander-Arnold wore the captain’s armband for the first time.
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp now admits that he could still have resolved the situation differently, but is still holding on to the decision not to make Salah captain.
– If all four captains cannot play, the captaincy will normally go to the person who has been at the club the longest. And how I saw it, it was Trent, Klopp tells The Guardian.
– Then someone told me that based on those criteria it should be Divock Origi. So it was my fault, Klopp admits.
Also, the successful manager says he has underestimated the importance of the captaincy to the players.
– I was a captain for a long time in my career, and I always thought “what job is this”, because there are few benefits and a lot of work. I didn’t feel, or didn’t feel, the importance of being a captain. Before the game, I didn’t realize how important it can be for the players, says Klopp.
– I talked to Mo about it later. Then I realized that it worked so well, so I clarified it. He obviously gave the interview. That is not a problem for me. He’s obviously disappointed. I didn’t do it on purpose, and if I made a mistake it wasn’t to make Divock Origi captain that day.
In his interview, Salah refused to rule out a transfer to Barcelona or Real Madrid, but Klopp says the Egyptian “is in a good mood, has good momentum and is in good shape.”
