Enjoy the Christmas weather the rest of the day. Soon the “shitty weather” will hit most of southern Norway.
In much of Norway, people have been enjoying cold, cloudless winter weather with sunshine and starry skies in recent days. But in the sea off Iceland there is a low pressure that will soon end the Christmas card mood in many places.
– It’s literally getting closer, literally, says on-duty meteorologist Lars Andreas Selberg at Værvarslingen in western Norway.
Along the entire coast it will be cloudy, the wind will increase, and precipitation in the form of rain and snow will spread east from tonight.
As early as Saturday night, meteorologists warn of difficult driving conditions both in the mountains and in various places in the lowlands of the eastern mountains.
– Visibility and column driving can be reduced on short notice, says Selberg, who can’t tell exactly when the precipitation hits eastern Norway. But it guarantees that it will come. Hazard warning for Saturday for the lowlands of about three to 15 cm of snow that can turn into rain.
“It’ll just be a good old-fashioned shitty time,” he says, and urges you to make sure you’re going shoddy under conditions if you’re driving a car.
It will be especially demanding in Agder and Telemark, where there can be freezing rain early Saturday morning. In Saltfjellet, Ofoten, Lofoten and Sør-Troms, bursts of up to 30 seconds have been reported.
Worst since sunday
Unfortunately, there are no signs of improvement in the weather over the weekend. On the contrary, the wind will increase from Sunday and the rains will increase in the mountains of eastern Norway. While the precipitation will come in the form of rain in the lowlands, up to 30 cm of snow, probably relatively wet, is expected in the mountains.
– We’ve already sent a warning. There may be even higher rainfall locally, says Selberg.
– Just the pain, then?
– There will be good skiing conditions from here, especially in the mountains.
– And the New Year’s weather?
– Bad weather can probably last until Wednesday. But New Year’s weather can be good, he says.
Gry Solli, a traffic operator for the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, reports on open mountain passes and good driving conditions so far this Christmas weekend.
