The news was first reported through guitar maker Dean Guitars on Twitter Wednesday. West’s family later confirmed that he died of a heart attack, according to Deadline.

West co-founded Mountain with Cream producer and bassist Felix Pappalardi in the late 1960s. West was the voice behind the band’s classic “Mississippi Queen” on their 1970 debut album “Climbing.”

Mountain played on the second day of the Woodstock festival, between the Canned Heat and the Grateful Dead, which placed them in the great league of rock. West was considered one of the best guitarists of his time.
