Alcohol, Children | Almost one in four drinks is the most on Christmas Eve

Paradox, think about the organization of the bedroom and give advice.

Christmas Eve is Christmas day when most people drink the most. Shows a recent survey conducted by Respons Analyze on behalf of Av-og-til and Vinmonopolet.

23 percent of all men responded on Christmas Eve in the survey, while 21 percent of women responded the same.

– It is a paradox that the most important holiday for children is the day we drink the most alcohol, says Randi Hagen Eriksrud, general secretary of the Av-og-til bedroom organization, to Nettavisen.

– Good humor does not always mean the same for children and adults.

Eriksrud believes that Christmas Eve is a type of day that can often be a little longer than previously thought.

– Christmas Eve should be the day we enjoy ourselves without restrictions, and for most people it also includes alcohol. Suddenly, we may have drunk more than we thought. A good trick might be to think in advance how much you want to drink.

“Emma”

Second in the poll follows the second day of Christmas. 13 percent have responded that they drink more on this day, while Christmas Day and Christmas Eve are also popular drinking days. 56 percent have not specified a specific day around Christmas when they drink the most, but say it varies a lot.

From time to time they say that they regularly receive stories from people who have experienced that Christmas is ruined by parent drinking. One of those who has made contact is “Emma”. Eventually she became so insecure from all the noise and discussions from the adult party that she brought the Christmas presents into the room, to open one of them peacefully under the duvet, as far away from the party as possible in the living room. .

– Children quickly notice that adults change when we drink alcohol. We see, hear and smell differently than we usually do. We get hot on the cheeks and bright on the eyes. We laugh louder and louder. And everyone who has tried to hide their drinking knows that the smell reveals it, says Eriksrud.

What do the children mean?

Another question that Norwegians have been asked is whether they have been to a New Year’s party where they felt that too much alcohol was drunk while children were present.

Here, 27 percent answered yes.

So the question is: What is too much? In this context, it is the children who have the advantage. Ipsos has conducted another survey for Av-og-til.

Here, 21 percent of children between the ages of 8 and 19 respond that they do not believe that adults can drink anything while with children. Fifty-one percent respond to one or two glasses, meaning nearly three in four children at this age believe that adults are allowed zero to two glasses of drinking while with children.

The case continues during the vote.

– It’s scary to see mom or dad change, and it’s lonely to notice that adults turn off the parents’ radar and aren’t as aware of children’s wants and needs as they usually are, says Eriksrud.

She has the following tips for Norwegians who are going to celebrate Christmas or New Years with children:

  1. Think about whether you should drink alcohol at night and, if so, how many glasses. Most children respond that they think 0, 1, or 2 glasses are okay. It can be a good starting point.
  2. If there are going to be multiple adults together, you may want to talk to each other ahead of time and agree on how to do it with alcohol. What is good and what is not? Good advice might be for at least one person to stay sober, in case something happens.
  3. Talk about alcohol with your children when you feel they are ready for it. Ask specific questions and take the answers you receive seriously. Remember that children should never take responsibility for adult alcohol consumption.
  4. If you are concerned that a child is not feeling well at home, it is important to take action. Call the Alarm for Children and Young People at 116 111 for advice from professionals.
