Kareem (22) in shock after police shot neighbor (39) in Bergen

At around 10 p.m. on Monday, Kareem Mahriz took his younger brother out onto the street. Around him, at the Ibsens gate of Bergen, there are several vehicles of all the emergency services. At 10:35 p.m., the police fired shots inside the apartment where Mahriz lives.

– I was completely shocked, says the 22-year-old.

The fire alarm went off

Shortly before, he had notified the police himself that the neighbor needed help. The man has a background in psychiatry and Mahriz himself tried to speak calmly to him.

– He calmed down, so I went up to my apartment. A short time later, I heard the fire alarm and then took my brother out onto the street.

When the police arrived, they discovered a fire in the apartment of the deceased.

It was decided that the police should arm themselves. This happened due to “the situation and the information obtained” according to the police.

Inside the apartment there was a situation that caused shots to be fired. Based on TV 2 experience, there will be two takes, at short intervals.

According to Police Chief Kåre Songstad, the deceased must have had a knife.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after. On Tuesday morning, the police met with the press and reported on something that rarely happens in Norway.

Parents have many questions

Attorney Kjetil Ottesen helps the 39-year-old’s parents in the case. He says they are deeply distressed.

– They are appalled by what happened. It is a very difficult situation for them right now. Then they have a lot of questions that they are asking themselves that they hope research can provide answers to.

The special unit for police affairs is now investigating the case with the assistance of Kripos.
