SELF-CRITICISM: Molde CEO Ole Erik Stavrum says the club “fooled itself” when 14 people outside of Molde’s cohort visited the team’s season finale. Here in connection with a VG interview in May. Photo: Bjørn S. Delebekk

According to local newspaper Romsdals Budstikke, 14 people left the Molde cohort at the end of the team’s season, a day before quarantine after an away game in Austria ended. Now the club is flat.

Published:

– At night people who did not belong to this cohort came in, and this is where we have to lie down completely and apologize. This will not happen, CEO Ole Erik Stavrum tells Romsdals Budstikke.

14 people from outside the Molde cohort showed up as the team celebrated the end of the season at a private event, reports Romsdals Budstikke.

The event was only for players and the closest support staff. The players must have been notified of the infraction, the newspaper reports, and the club must have contacted the municipal chief doctor and the police.

The event took place on Saturday, after the 5-0 win over Sarpsborg 08, but before the quarantine after the end of the away game against Rapid Wien in Austria. They played against the great Austrian club on Thursday December 10, while the celebration was on Saturday 19.

– We have deceived ourselves. We had one day left of that quarantine. We are very sorry for that. It is very stupid that this has happened, and a clear message has been given to the group of players that we do not think this is right, Stavrum tells the newspaper.

It was the players themselves who reported the infringement, and Stavrum says it shows that internal justice is high. Erling Knudtzon is the leader of the player selection at the club.

– Throughout the night in this event, it was the other who accessed the place. It should never have happened. This is something the entire group of players regrets, and when we found out what happened, the group of players themselves decided to address this, Knudtzon tells Romsdals Budstikke.

VG has attempted to reach out to CEO Stavrum for comment, so far without success.
