A December record was set at five newer gauging stations in western Norway, writes NRK.
The warmest of the five stations was at Kroken in Stryn, where it was measured up to 14.4 degrees. Dry winds from southern Europe are the cause of the unusually mild climate.
However, the highest record today was made at Tafjord in Norddal Township, where it was recorded up to 17 degrees. It is the fourth highest December temperature in 70 years.
– Møre og Romsdal has very high records from before, and we should be happy not to break the records, says meteorologist Bente Wahl.
The current heat record for December was set at Sunndalsøra in Møre og Romsdal on December 1, 1998. At that time, 18.3 degrees were recorded.
So far, 2020 has been an exceptionally warm year in Norway. In the first eleven months of the year, the average temperature has been 3.9 degrees, which is 2.2 degrees above normal. Normal is the average of thirty years from 1961 to 1990.
