The man charged with the negligent murder of a child (13) after a car collision in Oslo has explained to the police that he panicked after the incident and saw that there were others who could help.

The man’s defender, lawyer Harald Fjeldstad, tells VG.

On Friday afternoon, the accused driver in his 30s was questioned by police in Oslo. The driver did not know then that the young man was dead.

– He admits to having ridden this boy, and that he has ridden afterwards. Then acknowledge the facts. It has not commented on the question of guilt, says Fjeldstad.

It was on Thursday night that the police were notified that the 13-year-old boy had been hit by a car at Haugenstua in Oslo. The driver fled the scene of the accident and has also faced it in a police questioning on Friday.

The Oslo police district claims late Friday that the driver is charged with negligent manslaughter, driving under the influence and leaving the scene without helping the 13-year-old.

– He didn’t do it on purpose, so the question is whether he was negligent or not. You believe that you have not been negligent and that it is an accident. That’s what the investigation should bring to light, says the defender.

– Why did you escape from the scene of the accident?

– He explained that he panicked after the incident and saw other cars coming and understood that the boy would seek help. In such a situation, one may not be sure how clearly he is thinking, but the point was that he panicked. Then he knew that the other car was coming there and that it was not leaving the person lying alone. It was not his intention to leave a person alone without help. He does not believe that he advocates that he should leave, but in the heat of panic there were others who could help, responds the defender.

Suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

The driver of the murder in his 30s is also charged with driving under the influence of drugs in connection with the collision. The police also claim that he is charged with driving under the influence after an episode in Oslo in early December.

– I do not want to comment on details beyond that we are investigating this, says leader Rune Skjold for the Finance investigation and the investigation of special letters in the Oslo police district.

The driver in his 30s will be presented for custody at the Oslo District Court on Saturday.

– I have not seen the reasons why they are requesting custody. We believe there is no basis for that at this time. There is no danger of repetition in that, says the defender.

The police have not yet decided on the length of the detention or any restrictions, but, among other things, they will justify imprisonment with the risk of recidivism and loss of evidence.

– His thoughts are with the family.

Police say in a press release that relatives have been notified that the boy died at Ullevål hospital at 3.10pm on Friday. As of yet, no family assistance attorney has been appointed.

– The child died while we were being interrogated, so he was not confronted during the interrogation. He has only been questioned in connection with running over and injuring him. He remains in police custody, says the defender.

– He is having a bad time and is fully aware that it is worse for family members. It is difficult for him, but his thoughts are with the family. They have it much worse.

Defense attorney claims the accused driver considered signing up.

– But it didn’t get that far before the police were at the door, says Fjeldstad.
