As VG was able to reveal early Friday, TV 2 bought the right to show Norwegian football for a period of six years starting in 2022.

– We are very satisfied with the offer that TV 2 has provided and the commercial value that is established for Norwegian football in this agreement. TV 2 has delivered a very solid and comprehensive concept for Norwegian football, which will strengthen both the top and the breadth, says President Terje Svendsen of the Norwegian Football Association.

– Norwegian football is the biggest force in Norwegian sports and attracts a large part of the Norwegian public in joy, dreams and community. We are happy and honored that, together with football and our partners, we will have the opportunity to develop Norwegian football from 2023, says CEO and editor-in-chief Olav T. Sandnes on TV 2.

Collaborate with NRK

The agreement includes the rights of Eliteserien, Toppserien and NM. The contract is the most important in the history of Norwegian football. The 1st division for women and men is also included in the package that TV 2 has purchased.

This happens after the channel obtained an exclusive right to negotiate with the Fotball Media company, which administers the rights on behalf of the Norwegian Football Association and Norsk Toppfotball (the men’s clubs). They acquired that right in competition with, among others, the telecommunications giants Telenor and Altibox.

“We are especially eager to, together with women’s football and our partner NRK, help advance women’s football as there is increasing attention in Norway,” Sandnes says on TV 2.

Billion dollar battle

The Telenor / Altibox constellation is said to have unveiled its concept for soccer spikes on December 4. After this, TV 2 should have presented an impulse that included a clause on exclusive trading rights if Fotball Media wanted to go further with them, according to VG sources.

That requirement was met. In retrospect, the Telenor / Altibox alliance has increased its offering, but VG is informed that the award has now gone to TV 2.

Take back Norwegian football

It was TV 2 that broadcast Norwegian football until Discovery won the previous rights match, for the 2017-2022 seasons.

Since then, TV 2 has lost the Premier League to the Nordic NENT Group. This has contributed to the channel now investing several billion kronor in Norwegian football.
